An Inspiring Journey Begins
In 2023, everything changed for Sam Perrett when his wife, Nikki, was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis.
This life-altering moment lit a spark in Sam—a devoted father of two from Worcester—deepening his determination to focus on his own health and fitness while also advocating for the MS Society.
Harnessing this motivation, he launched an ambitious five-year fundraising project, aptly named Source2Sea, with a staggering goal of raising £500,000 for the organization.
A Challenging Adventure Ahead
Sam’s journey is anything but ordinary.
He has mapped out an adventurous plan that involves exploring five distinct rivers over the next five years, utilizing a thrilling combination of hiking, kayaking, and cycling for each endeavor.
This year, he will commence his travels along the River Severn, followed by excursions on the Rhone, flowing through France and Switzerland, the Tagus in Spain and Portugal, and the stunning Rhine that courses from the Swiss Alps to the Netherlands.
While a fifth river remains to be determined, Sam harbors ambitious dreams for this grand finale.
Despite the challenges he anticipates, Sam views the River Severn as essential preparation for the strenuous adventures ahead.
He recognizes the immense difficulty of the journey, believing it will challenge him both physically and mentally.
To enhance his readiness, he engaged a personal trainer and successfully shed around 17kg.
Additionally, Sam constructed a home gym, which he shares with Nikki and their two young daughters, ages nine and two.
Commitment and Resilience
Previously accustomed to a more relaxed lifestyle with minimal experience in intense physical training, Sam is ready to push beyond his limits.
His trek along the River Severn will cover an impressive 385 kilometers (239 miles) over a grueling seven days.
The journey kicks off with a strenuous 46-kilometer hike on day one, then transitions to five consecutive days of kayaking—averaging 48 kilometers daily.
To conclude this remarkable endeavor, he has planned an 80-kilometer bike ride from Gloucester to Portishead on the final day.
The impact of Nikki’s diagnosis has weighed heavily on their family, introducing a host of uncertainties and emotional hurdles, especially as a young couple raising children.
Sam often grapples with concerns about their future, reflecting on what lies ahead for them all.
Nonetheless, amidst these trials, Sam’s determination to raise much-needed funds for the MS Society remains steadfast.
With a heart brimming with hope, he aspires to gather an astounding £500,000 over the next five years, fully aware of the ambitious nature of this goal but using it as a crucial driving force to forge ahead.
Sam Perrett’s journey embodies the resilience of the human spirit.
His story not only highlights the battle against multiple sclerosis but also celebrates the healing strength found in community, purpose, and family support.
His unwavering commitment to making a meaningful impact is bound to inspire many along the way.
